If you are afraid of the dentist, you are not alone. According to a 2008 report, about 30% of Americans are afraid to go to the dentist. Because of that, they avoid necessary dental care. Many will never darken a dental office until an emergency arises. Dr. Potts wants to help change that. One of his biggest joys is treating fearful patients and turning around how they feel about dental care. Just listen to what some of our patients are saying.
“I avoided the dentist for 20+ years, and finally went to Dr Potts. Four years later I have a healthy mouth, fully trust the staff, and almost look forward to going to the dentist. If you have been avoiding the dentist, I have never found a more respectful, caring group of people. On the last visit I had to have a root canal, and am proud to say I no longer have to be ‘knocked out’ because of the anxiety. This ties directly back to the trust the staff has built with me. Many thanks to Dr Pott’s and his staff!!” ~Brian H.
“If I could rate Dr. Potts’ office more than five stars, I would. I am a very anxious dental patient and every person I had contact with at the office was reassuring and non-judgmental. I am certain that any further care I need will be done as painlessly as possible.” ~Carrie B.
“I have had serious issues with the dentist in the past, but Dr. Potts and his staff put me at ease the minute I showed up. They were wonderful and caring and did not pass judgement as to why I had not been to the dentist in some years. While I know I have some teeth issues that need to be fixed, I know that I am in good hands. Thank you again for putting me at ease!” ~Tejal M.
Sedation Dentistry Helps Us Cater to Cowards
If you’re dealing with dental fear, we have several levels of sedation to help you. If all you need is a little sedation to help you take the edge off your anxiety then nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, might work for you. This mild relaxant will put you at ease during your procedure. Once your treatment is over, we’ll give you oxygen and you’ll gradually come back to your normal state. One of the advantages to this treatment is you are able to drive yourself to and from the appointment.
If your anxiety requires something a little stronger, we can do oral conscious sedation. Dr. Potts does what is called incremental dose protocols. This allows him do just the amount of sedation that you are comfortable with. Throughout the procedure you will be responsive to verbal stimuli and able to breathe without assistance. At all times we’ll monitor your pulse, blood oxygen, and blood pressure. This allows a level of sedation comparable to I.V. sedation, without the needles.
