But perhaps the best name for it\u2014and the only one that captures its true nature\u2014is <a title=\"BMS\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/burning-mouth-syndrome\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20350911\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS)<\/a>. Affecting 2% to 5% of Americans, it may seem a minor thorn in the side. Still, that&#8217;s 6.34 to 15.85 million people suffering from this mysterious disease.<\/p>\n<h2>What makes it mysterious?<\/h2>\n<p>It began &#8216;appearing&#8217; or being reported to doctors in the 1970s. At the time doctors pointed to\u00a0mucosal, <a title=\"Periodontal Disease\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=periodontal+disease&amp;rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS541US541&amp;oq=periodontal&amp;aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0l5.3535j0j7&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;espv=210&amp;es_sm=93&amp;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">periodontal<\/a>, and restorative disorders as well as mental or emotional causes. As the years have passed, doctors have questioned these because often there&#8217;s no corresponding physical disorder with BMS.<\/p>\n<p>There are some general risk factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Being a so-called \u201csupertaster,\u201d or someone with a high density of the small tongue bumps called papillae, which contain taste buds<\/li>\n<li>Upper respiratory tract infection<\/li>\n<li>Previous dental procedures<\/li>\n<li>Allergic reactions to food<\/li>\n<li>Medications<\/li>\n<li>Traumatic life events<\/li>\n<li>Stress<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The problem is that so many sufferers do not fall into these categories. What makes BMS more diabolical is that the mouth and gums appear perfectly normal. There&#8217;s no inflammation or sores or recognizable signs.<\/p>\n<h2>Symptoms<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s so baffling that it has become an area of major interest for <a title=\"Dr. Andres Pinto\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uhhospitals.org\/doctors\/Pinto-Andres-1437280583\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Andres Pinto<\/a>, the new chair in the Department of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology at\u00a0<a title=\"Case Western Reserve\" href=\"https:\/\/case.edu\/dental\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Case Western Reserve University&#8217;s School of Dental Medicine<\/a>. He&#8217;s done extensive research in the field of oral pain. He lists the symptoms of BMS as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Persistent burning tongue and oral pain with no apparent dental cause<\/li>\n<li>Abnormal taste or dry feeling in the mouth<\/li>\n<li>Symptoms that disappear when eating<\/li>\n<li>Burning sensations may migrate across several oral areas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>He encourages people with any of these to seek out a dentist because, as said before, there&#8217;s often now visible sign of the syndrome. While the dentist may be able to diagnose Burning Mouth Syndrome, its cause is truly elusive.<\/p>\n<h2>Glimmers of Hope<\/h2>\n<p>There are some patterns. For instance, it especially occurs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In women age 50 to 70<\/li>\n<li>In women from 3 years before to 12 years after menopause<\/li>\n<li>Comorbid with psychogenic disorders, physical illnesses originating from emotional\/mental stress<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The neurologic aspect of BMS provides the most promise of finding its root cause. The reason: BMS is often found in people with neurological function changes; also, BMS has appeared as a secondary disorder in cases that often involve improper neurological regulation: diabetes, anemia, thyroid disorders, and vitamin deficiency.<\/p>\n<p>Since BMS commonly occurs alongside menopause, hormones may play a role too. But neurology seems to be where the answers will lie. A major point that supports this is that it&#8217;s most likely the deterioration of nerves <em>under<\/em> the oral lining that cause the burning. Hence the reason why there are no signs on the <em>surface<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The pain can be bad enough to interrupt quality of life. There are, however, ways to handle it: special mouthwash, analgesics, and other topical treatments.
