Most often, this happens when the muscles in the back of your throat or mouth relax, allowing your tongue to obstruct your airway, cutting off oxygen to your lungs and brain.<\/p>\n<p>After an OSA episode, breathing usually resumes with a loud gasp, snort or body jerk. Often patients aren\u2019t aware this is happening\u2014though if they\u2019re spending time in bed with a significant other, their partner probably is.<\/p>\n<h3>Sleep apnea doesn\u2019t sound like the most exciting topic for a radio show to tackle, so what\u2019s up with the interview?<\/h3>\n<p>Greg Bishop knows that by talking Sleep apnea, he\u2019s saving lives.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nlFzQvHqihY\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>One in five Americans has mild OSA, while the diagnosis in another one in five is moderate to severe OSA.<\/p>\n<p>A grand total of 75 million Americans lives every night with sleep apnea. And, those are just the ones who know. It\u2019s estimated that 80-90 percent of breathing disorders remain undiagnosed.<\/p>\n<p>In the best-case scenarios, patients find themselves fatigued throughout the day. Worst case, they suffer Excessive Daytime Sleepiness and find themselves in dangerous situations. Left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to heart attack, stroke, diabetes and other serious health conditions\u2014including suffocation.<\/p>\n<h2>Check, check. One, two.<\/h2>\n<h3>Warning signs of sleep apnea in adults<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>* \u00a0Snoring<\/li>\n<li>* \u00a0Waking up suddenly and feeling like you&#8217;re gasping or choking<\/li>\n<li>* \u00a0Drowsiness or Excessive Daytime Sleepiness<\/li>\n<li>* \u00a0Dry mouth or sore throat when you wake up<\/li>\n<li>* \u00a0Headaches in the morning<\/li>\n<li>* \u00a0Trouble concentrating, forgetfulness, depression, or irritability<\/li>\n<li>* \u00a0Trouble waking up in the mornings<\/li>\n<li>* \u00a0Sweating a lot at night<\/li>\n<li>* \u00a0Restlessness during sleep<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Symptoms in adolescents may not be as obvious.
