My boyfriend has been having trouble eating. He said his wisdom tooth hurts but that it just “does that sometimes.” First, I was a bit shocked that he had not had his wisdom teeth removed to begin with. I thought everybody had them removed before they were 18. At least that is what my mom told me. I finally talked him into letting me see it because I was worried. The tooth is only partway out and the gum is really red and swollen. I think he needs to get an emergency visit, but he assured me this just happens sometimes. Am I worrying for nothing?<\/p>\n

First, while many people get their wisdom teeth out, and it is better to do so when you are in your later teen years, not everyone needs to have their wisdom teeth removed. Your boyfriend may have been in that category. However, something has changed. The swelling in his gum as well as the pain he is in indicates that there is an infection. <\/p>\n

With that in mind, yes, he does need to see a dentist. You did not mention whether he had a regular dentist or not. I suspect not or with his recurring pain, or his dentist would have recommended that he have that tooth extracted. <\/p>\n

My suggestion is that you have him schedule an appointment with a dentist who sees new patients quickly in the case of dental emergencies<\/a>. He will need to get this infection dealt with before it spreads. <\/p>\n

There is some good news. Under normal circumstances, when a tooth has to be extracted it needs to be replaced. With wisdom teeth, however, that extra procedure and expense is not necessary. Also, if the idea of going to the dentist makes him nervous. Let him know he can see a sedation dentist<\/a> to have his tooth extracted. <\/p>\n
