I’m going to have a dental implant placed there but need a temporary replacement. My dentist suggested a Maryland Bridge, but I am wondering if it will attach to the dental crowns. My husband kept saying my dentist wouldn’t suggest it if it wouldn’t, but something about the whole idea has me nervous.

Laura

Dear Laura,

While you can attach a Maryland Bridge to porcelain crowns, however, they will not be as secure as they are when bonded to natural tooth enamel. I know your dentist is probably thinking it is just temporary. I will be honest, though, I do not consider a Maryland Bridge a temporary tooth replacement.

The only way to properly secure a Maryland Bridge is to prepare the anchor teeth with grooves. Any time you have to make permanent changes to the structure of teeth, I would not consider that a temporary replacement.

This is also quite an expensive temporary replacement. Generally, I would suggest a dental flipper for patients who just need a temporary replacement while they are waiting for their dental implant crown. This is inexpensive and will not require any structural changes. I would suggest you do that instead of the Maryland Bridge.

A dental implant is the top of the line tooth replacement so that is a good choice. Be aware, if your current dental crowns are close to needing replacement, it may make more sense for you to get a dental bridge instead of the implant. It suspends a false tooth between two dental crowns. This can save you money, but only makes sense if they need to be replaced. Don’t get a bridge if their healthy and have years of life ahead of them.

This blog is brought to you by Libertyville Dentist Dr. David Potts.

I lost a tooth that is between two dental crowns.
