I have some teeth that are a problem in the back of my mouth. One of them is now infected and is causing me a great deal of pain. Additionally, the right side of my face is swollen. I don’t have money or dental insurance. Is there some other way to treat this? I do have medical insurance. Do you think my doctor could write me a prescription?<\/p>\n

I am sorry you are in such a tough spot. While getting an antibiotic sounds like a good idea, it will not actually help your tooth infection. This is because the pulp inside the tooth dies. When that happens, the medication cannot reach the infected tissue. The only way for the infection to be dealt with is for the dentist to physically remove the pulp. <\/p>\n

There are two ways to do that. The first way is to have a root canal treatment done. This is the ideal solution because it will save your tooth. The second option is to have the tooth extracted<\/a>. I would consider this a last resort because then you have to replace the lost tooth. <\/p>\n

I know you are in a tough spot financially, but I will be honest with you that you have a dental emergency<\/a> on your hands. If the side of your face is swelling up it means the infection is spreading. You don’t want it to spread to your heart, brain, or lungs. <\/p>\n

Many communities have dental services to help people in your situation. I would call the local dental society. If you happen to live in a community that does not have these types of help, then I have another option. <\/p>\n

You could call around to local dentists and explain your situation. There is likely to be someone who would be willing to help you. They can help you deal with the infection and work out payment plans for you. Look for someone who advertises as an affordable dentist<\/a>. Often they are more willing to work with patients on payments, especially when you are in such a difficult situation.<\/p>\n
