I’m an ex-addict. Technically, I know there is no such thing as an ex-addict. However, I’m in treatment with a counselor and methadone maintenance. While I was an addict I let a lot of things go and that included my oral health. My teeth are a disaster. I need a lot of dental work. The problem I have is every dentist I’ve spoken with said that they will treat me but they cannot give me any pain meds for after the procedure given my condition. I even gave them the name and number of my clinic as well as written permission to speak with my counselor and make sure I’m following the treatment plan and protocol. It doesn’t seem to matter. I want a healthy mouth, but I don’t know if I can really take the pain that will follow. Is there any option for someone in my position? <\/p>\n

First, let me say that you are doing amazing things getting the treatment you need and persevering even though you are facing resistance from those you are coming to for help. While you are in a very difficult position, there is a solution. One of the reasons you are having trouble is because most dentists are afraid of the DEA. They don’t want to risk their business even though they may want to help. <\/p>\n

My suggestion is that you look for a sedation dentist<\/a>. They are more compassionate than most. They may be willing to help you. Another benefit is that by using a type of sedation, such as oral conscious sedation, you will be able to get more dental work done in each session. This will allow you to get caught up on your work faster. <\/p>\n

I would ask them to triage your needed work, which will mean that you get the most urgent work done quickly. Then, every procedure gets easier and easier. <\/p>\n
