Every year, for one day, there is a day of free dentistry. It’s a day when those in need, without the means, or the wherewithal to get dental care finally receive it. It’s a day that is recognized all over, but not held nationally. Instead it is an event separately celebrated all over, on different days of the year, but all serving the same purpose.
The name of the day is “Smiles from the Heart.” Trying to track down an exact date on it will prove elusive. In some cities it’s held in February, others in the fall, and others in the spring. At Lake County Dental Care we held it on May 10 of this year.
Call us a little late for breaking the news. Or a little excited for when we do it again in the Spring of 2014. Either way, it’ll be a day of excitement, of joy, and of a lot of free dental work. Not only that. If patients require more work—more than can be done in a day—they’re referred for further care at little or no cost.
“Smiles from the Heart’s” origins are little vague, but it seems the idea was originally conceived by Dr. Vincent Monticciolo. In 2001, Dr. Monticciolo founded Dentistry From the Heart. The idea was simple: a non-profit organization that coordinated a free day of dentistry every year.
His event was held on the Friday before Valentine’s Day every year. Whether or not “Smiles from the Heart” directly traces its origins from this, once the idea was out, everyone wanted to contribute.
To be deprived of this right because of lack of money, or insurance, or availability of care is incompatible with living a truly healthy life. That’s what “Smiles from the Heart” is all about. A healthy mouth is essential to a healthy life.
