Over the past decade or so, ugly sweaters have become a holiday tradition. Droves of college kids go to their local Goodwill and Salvation Army stores to try and find the worst, or best depending on your perspective, Christmas themed sweater. The brighter and more garish the better. But what got this trend started?
The origins are murky. Fair Isle sweaters have been around for as long as people have been knitting. Their popularity did spike when Mr. Huxtable, played by Bill Cosby, started wearing crazy sweaters on his show. Around this same time, National Lampoon put out a Christmas movie in which the father, played by Chevy Chase, wears some pretty ridiculous Christmas sweaters. While neither of these guys really fathered the trend themselves, they contributed by making the sweaters popular in the 80s, which has led to plethora of choices in thrift stores nowadays.
There are many people who say they threw the first ugly sweater party, but the first people to write about it were a group of Vancouver friends. They wrote a sarcastic guide to throwing the ugliest sweater party possible, complete with pictures and simple instructions for how to maximize the ugly factor. Their little pamphlet received some publicity, which probably sparked the explosion of sweater parties around 2001/2002.
Now ugly Christmas sweaters have become their own business. Multiple websites specialize in just these sweaters, and Ebay can barely keep up with the demand. People seem to love the idea that they do not have to worry about what they look, just throw a big sweater on because you are expected to look silly. So if you haven’t already, raid your grandfather’s closet or the local Goodwill and try to out-do your friends this year with the most ridiculous sweater you can find.
