My Dentist Won’t Give Me Dental Implants Because I Smoke

Posted on August 25, 2022 by writeradmin.

Does a dentist have a right to refuse you a procedure just because he doesn’t like one of your habits? I lost a tooth and want to get a dental implant, but my dentist said no because I am a smoker. Can he do that?

Dear Louis,

Dental implants are by far the best tooth replacement possible. However, they are an advanced procedure and there are risk factors. Smoking is a risk factor. However, it may be a risk you are willing to take. I’m sure you would be able to find a dentist willing to do the procedure for you even though you smoke. Before you make that decision, however, you should know what your dentist’s concerns were. Then, at least you’ll be taking an educated risk.

Nicotine Constricts Blood Vessels

One of the side-effects of both smoking and vaping is that is constricts your blood vessels, restricting oxygen flow to your tissues. This is dangerous when it comes to dental implants because it can contribute to infection. Infection is the one of the leading causes for dental implant failure.

A second issue with this is that when the implant is surgically implanted into your jaw, your body needs to have the bone in your jaw fuse to the implant in order to secure it. With constricted blood vessels, this is less likely to occur.

Nicotine Can Mask the Symptoms of Gum Disease. When you have gum disease, your gums are generally inflamed and red. The constricted blood flow from nicotine means that is masked. You could have gum disease without knowing it. One of the factors that can keep you from being a dental implant candidate is gum disease.

Options if You Want Dental Implants but Smoke

  • Go for it anyway, knowing your risks. As I said earlier, you will be able to find a dentist willing to give you dental implants anyway. They’re happy to take your money. Just make sure they are qualified. This means that they have post-doctoral training in dental implants. Ideally, they will be able to do the surgery as well as the restoration. This takes away the problem of miscommunication between the dentist and oral surgeon which can derail your procedure.
  • Quit temporarily. You’ll need to stop smoking at least a month prior to your surgery, as well as several months after while you heal.
  • Quit permanently. There are more options these days to help people with nicotine addiction. Speak with your doctor about some options.

I hope this helps. This blog is brought to you by Libertyville Dentist Dr. David Potts.
