Can I get dental implants if I have type 1 diabetes?
Henry- Lincoln, Nebraska
You can generally get dental implants even with type 1 diabetes, but you need to be aware it is a real risk factor for implant failure. Extra care needs to be taken at each step. You don’t want just your average dentist to do your implants. You’ll want to find a skilled implant dentist with a lot of post graduate training.
There is one other thing to be aware of. Some dentists do the surgery themselves, and others will send you somewhere to have the surgical part of the procedure done. If he sends you to a surgeon for the first part of the procedure, make sure they are communicating carefully.
There have been horror stories of patients who had the surgery done, paid the surgeon and then found out he placed the implants in the wrong place.
