I got some dentures and it is very hard to eat with them. A friend of mine who also lost her teeth but she got dental implants. I didn’t at first because they are freaking expensive. But, she can eat anything she wants. So, I need to get them. I don’t have her kind of budget. I’m hoping to find a way to save some money on it. Is there a way to maybe get it done at a dental school? I do all my cleanings at a hygiene school and they only charge me $30. I’m hoping it would be possible to get a discount that way. Or could they at least give me better fitting dentures? My dentist said mine are awesome, but they make it hard to chew.

Dear Dean,

Implant Retained Dentures
Just so you know, I would go for the implant supported dentures and not just better fitting dentures. Even the best fitting dentures will reduce your chewing capacity by 50%. However, the bigger problem is the loss of jawbone. When your teeth were removed, your body immediately begins to resorb the minerals in your jawbone in order to use them elsewhere in your body. Eventually, after about ten years or more, you will no longer have enough jawbone left to keep in your dentures. This is known as facial collapse. Having dental implants placed, will prevent this from happening because your body interprets them as having teeth it needs to support.
Yes, you can use a school for this. What you will want to look for is a school that teaches dentists how to place dental implants rather than just a basic dental school. They don’t do an adequate job teaching implants. If you can find one of the post-doctoral institutions, they will let you get your dental implants there. It will also be discounted. They do that because while the students are learning, your appointments will take longer than the normal appointments. Lowering the price is to make up for your inconvenience.
