I’ve had several dental surgeries and never had a problem before my last one. This one was with a different dentist, so I’m wondering if he did something different. I felt a little nauseated at first and just rested on the couch. But, it didn’t help. I vomited, got dizzy, then had trouble breathing. It felt like a panic attack. Could the sedation have caused that? Eventually it went away, but I wonder if I should have called 911. I couldn’t do anything much but just lay there.

Dear Danielle,
Generally, dental sedation is perfectly safe. However, each dentist prefers different types of sedation medication. If this is the first time this has happened, it could be this particular sedation didn’t quite sit right with something in your system.
I’m a bit concerned. It sounds like you were alone after your procedure. That’s very dangerous for you. Your dentist is supposed to make sure you have a ride and someone to stay with you. What if it hadn’t gone away? You’d have needed an ambulance and wouldn’t have been able to call one.
Going forward, I’d call your dentist’s office and let them know your reaction. If you happen to need another procedure which requires sedation, he should use another type of medication for you. It would also be helpful if he called your former dentist to find out which medication he or she used on you which your body accepted just fine. That way the next go round isn’t an experiment.
