I want to get dental implants for two teeth that are going to be extracted. However, my dentist says I’m not a good candidate for the procedure because I’m diabetic. Is that true?
Melanie – St. Louis
Melanie,
Generally, to be a good candidate for dental implants, you just need to be in good general health. Diabetes doesn’t keep you from getting implants. It just complicates the procedure and puts you at greater risk of implant failure.
Don’t push your dentist into doing them. He’s probably discouraging you from them because doing it is out of his comfort zone. You’ll want someone who is comfortable with the procedure and has a high success rate with diabetic patients.
Call around and don’t hesitate to ask about both their implant training and their success rate, including with diabetic patients.
