I talked to my dentist about whitening my teeth. I was planning on just doing it with those regular bleaching trays. He had just invested in this new machine– a Zoom Whitening machine. He mentioned that my teeth would get whiter with the Zoom machine than with the trays. I do want really white teeth, but it is more expensive. Is the extra cost worth it?
Pennie
Dear Pennie,
I hope there was some miscommunication here and not just your dentist pushing his new technology. Zoom Whitening is a wonderful, effective, and fast way to whiten your teeth. That being said, I would not necessarily say it whitens more thoroughly than traditional bleaching trays. What it does do is whiten significantly faster. You can get your teeth very white in just one appointment.
If you go the traditional route, you can get your teeth thoroughly whitened as well, it will just take several weeks instead of one appointment. In fact, if you are persistent enough, you can even get them WHITER than you would with Zoom.
If lower cost is what you are after, go with bleaching trays and just be diligent about them. You will achieve amazing results. If speed is what is more important to you, go with Zoom.
Getting a Complete Smile Makeover
Teeth whitening is a great way to give yourself a more healthy, youthful appearance at a minimal cost. However, if there are other things about your smile that you are not happy with such as chips, gaps, or shape, porcelain veneers can re-do everything. It is the total smile makeover that Hollywood celebrities get when they are trying to get that million-dollar smile.
However, this is not a cheap procedure (though thankfully not actually a million dollars) and you would not want to go to a dentist who is the cheapest. That is usually a bad sign. It is an advanced procedure that takes post-doctoral training, skill, and artistry. Think of it as more of an investment. It is also a good idea to make sure they have a beautiful smile guarantee.
